Parking lot, Allée du Stade, Berlin
(ISO 200, f2.8 @ 30mm, 3sec., 01:04) This is the parking lot of the French-German funfair in Berlin after midnight. Yes, I went into the funfair after it closed and I start with showing you the last image I shot that night. I assume the remaining cars in the distance belong to people working at the place because all visitors had left by that time.

Potsdamer Platz Station, Berlin Center
(ISO 100, f4.5 @ 26mm, 0.6sec., 22:01) If there is one thing I love about Berlin, then it is the contrast in all possible ways. This image is in five minutes walking distance from the last one I posted (Matchbox) but literally it is worlds apart. I experimented with PS here, combining three shots in a smart layer stack and used the median filter to achieve a cleaner image. This…

Dillingen, Saar, close by the motorway number 8
(ISO 200, f6.3 @ 35mm, 69sec., 21:52) It was pitch dark not like what you see in this image. I had to turn the car and move in a little into this empty place when my lights revealed these trailers. This is the German motorway 8 from Luxembourg via Schengen to Salzburg in Austria. Some say it is the most dangerous Autobahn in Germany because significant parts still remain in…

Duisburg harbour scene
(ISO 100, f6.3 @ 35mm, 2.5sec., 21:55) This harbour has been fundamentally transformed during the last 20 years. The basis for this model of development in the Ruhr district was delivered in 1994 by the British architect Norman Foster. Since then, the area has been changed into a district combining employment, housing, culture and water-based leisure activities. Today, it is both an industrial monument and a main stop on the…

Railway track, Völklingen Ironworks
(ISO 100, f6.3 @ 25mm, 64sec., 22:00) This railway track cuts through the edge between the protected heritage area and the still active part of the iron works. I was composing the image from a bridge and it was all a bit too dark and felt quite dull until I observed a car arriving in the center of the frame. A man got out and opened the door of the…

Völklingen heritage site, view from the parking lot of a supermarket
(ISO 100, f8 @ 35mm, 5sec., 21:10) Völklingen has a population of roughly 40.000. At the economic height in 1965 almost every second citizen was working for the iron works. 30 years later there were only 3.500 of those jobs left. Luckily the UNESCO declared Völklingen a World Heritage Site in 1994 which now attracts more than 200.000 visitors per year and makes the city the 2nd biggest center of…
